She went on to describe practices that companies can use to raise the quality of their employee experiences. The final speaker, John Sterman, opened with a joke about the optimist and the pessimist. The optimist, he said, says that this is the best of all possible worlds. The pessimist says I think youre right.' After a pause and a translation, the Dalai Lama ho ho hod his amusement and the audience echoed him. Prof. Sterman suggested that all the other speakers had been describing SYMPTOMS of the fundamental problem: growth, both in population and in consumption per person. He emphasized the limitations of turning only to technology for solutions, pointing to the development of the atomic bomb and antibiotics as innovations with unintended consequences, with the following illustration: He said that one problem is that people care less about earning enough money to be happy, and more about earning MORE money than other people. The image forever imprinted on my brain is not of the Dalai Lama, however. I cant stop thinking about the violin performance that preceded the panelists entrance. A soloist played three beautiful pieces. After the first, he reached down with his left hand to adjust what I initially mistook to be a watch on his right wrist. He was having some trouble with it, and I thought it was a little rude of him to be so intent on checking the time in the middle of a performance. As soon as this comes on, he said, I will play a piece called Meditation. I suddenly realized that he wasnt wearing a watch at all. He had a stub for a right arm, and there was a sort of clasp around his forearm and elbow that he was adjusting. The violin bow was somehow clipped onto that band. He had played so effortlessly that I hadnt noticed. When he began playing again, my attention was glued to his stub as it glided through the air, back and forth and back and forthI noticed that he had a very nice, white smile. The Last Thirty Years Essay Hi, my name is David Heard. I just turned twenty years old on February 4. I am a second generation American. My whole family is white and is originally from England. I have an older sister, Mary, who we do not see anymore, (I will get to that later), a younger brother, Adam, and both my parents. My parents and little brother live in a nice size house for the three of them. I plan to get married soon, but for now I live in a house near my parents by myself. They do not own that much land, but it is enough for my momââ¬â¢s garden and for my little brother to play on. My father used to own a little ice cream and candy shop just on the outskirts of Boston. I took it over because my father does not want to work anymore. He feels that he is getting to old to be getting up before the sun rises to make candy.Exactly one month after my birthday President Lincoln was inaugurated. At the end of his inauguration speech he said, ââ¬Å"We (the North and the South) are not enemies, but friendsà ¢â¬ , (Out of Many, 444). As much as I respect President Lincoln for the great man that he is I do not believe this. Things in this country are going to get worse before they get better. The population of this country has dramatically increased and this is causing more violence to occur between classes. One cannot walk down the street without seeing a fight somewhere. The country is becoming much too violent. I just hope some big war does not erupt soon. Things have changed so much since I was born and even a few years before I was born. I am a strong believer in human rights, such as humane treatment of Indians and slaves. I think that is was terrible how we, the white people, pushed the Indians off their land. My father told me that the Indian Removal Act of 1830 was a terrible time in our young countryââ¬â¢s history. There were Five Civilized Tribes: the Cherokee, the Chickasaws, the Creeks, the Choctaws and the Seminoles. In 1830 the tribes had moved in a direction to live with the whites and adopted the ways of the white man. The Indians resisted suggestions that they should remove themselves from their own land. So, President Jackson urged the Congress to pass the Indian Removal Act, which appropriated funds for relocation, by force if necessary. Jackson sent officials to try to negotiate treaties with the Indians. Some tribes reluctantly signed and prepared to move, but not the Cherokees, who took extensive steps to adopt white ways. The Cherokees fought back by using the law. At first, it appeared they won because the Supreme Court said that legally the Cherokees could not be removed from their land. But Jackson refused to follow the ruling of the Supreme Court. The Cherokees were then forced to leave their lands and go west to Oklahoma.This was called the ââ¬Å"Trail of Tearsâ⬠because along the journey to Oklahoma more than one-quarter of the Cherokees died. The Seminole tribe took a different route then the Cherokees and they fought back. The war lasted into the 1840ââ¬â¢s and the government just decided to give up and let them stay. My father tells me that this was a time the government is already trying to ignore and not acknowledge it as a very brutal and pointless mistake. Slavery is another event that did not exactly affect my family personally, but since I am a strong believer in human rights I hate slavery. Since we live just outside of Boston and a lot of slaves flee to Boston when they escape we used to see many ex-slaves up here. We even let some stay with us for a while when they first escaped. Then the Fugitive Slave Act was passed in 1850. This act helped slave owners greatly because even if a slave had escaped he was not safe at all up North. People that harbored slaves could also get in trouble for housing them. Even though this was in effect my family took the risk and helped slaves that had escaped. All the slaves that we have had at our house, they were all very respectful, courteous and very grateful the whole time they were here. I can honestly say that I would have been friends with most of them if they lived by me. One major case that greatly angered me was the case of Dred Scott in 1857. Dred Scott was a man that was born a slave and later sold to Dr. John Emerson, an Army physician from Missouri. Dr. Emerson had to travel and live in Illinois and Wisconsin. Abolitionists decided to sue on Dred Scottââ¬â¢s behalf for his freedom because he no longer lived in slave territory with his master. This case made it all the way to the Supreme Court. They ruled that Dred Scott could not sue because he was property and not a United States citizen. It was also stated by the Supreme Court that the government could not interfere with the personal arrangements of property. This is ridiculous that a living, breathing human being can be considered somebody elseââ¬â¢s property and the government cannot interfere with this. She lives in the Oneida Community in New York. I have heard some pretty interesting things about that place. It is a community that is comprised of around 200 people that think the framework of the world today is both unstable and inconsistent. The community is very open with one another. One of the things that make Oneida unique is that they have mutual criticism, which is when they sit a person down and tell them all the good and bad qualities about them. I guess it is supposed to make it so that nobody has any lasting problems with anybody else. They also have many sexual pa rtners, which is called complex marriage. Everybody shares with everybody, even in the bedroom. It sounds like a very peaceful place there. She has been there since the beginning in 1848. One man I greatly respect for all of his efforts is Fredrick Douglass. Frederick Douglass is an abolitionist. His main action as an abolitionist is speaking out against slavery and freedom for African-Americans. He goes on lecture tours and is known for his very inspirational speeches. I have been to one of his speeches in Boston and it really moved me. It made me realize how horrible slavery was and that no man should have to endure that kind of life. Douglass also was the editor and publisher of a newspaper called The North Star. The North Star was first published in 1847. The newspaper promoted freedom and equality. I try to read old newspapers whenever I have time. The North Star stopped publication in 1851. It was very interesting and insightful. I do not see how people can read The North Star and listen to Fredrick Douglass speak and still believe that slavery is perfectly fine. The last thirty or so years in our great developing nation have been very hectic and exciting. Our n ation is going to prosper, but I still fear something bad might happen before our country will truly prosper into a worldwide power. I hope and pray that our country can learn from its mistakes and move on to become a better nation because of them. Once people realize that our nation can be better off without slavery and the persecution of Indians, we will finally be able to treat people the way they should be treated and truly be the land of the free. No living, breathing human being should be recognized as a piece of property or pushed off of their property. As I begin to think about how our nation is developing I sometimes wonder why I have not joined my sister at the Oneida Community. They are a group of people that realizes the world is unstable and inconsistent and they are doing something about it to live a better life. Viewers must be aware of what the media is trying to push on them, especially females. Its as if our society only knows of two gender roles, masculine and feminine. Women in the media, in my opinion are the ones who are portrayed in a ay that influences young women and teens more negatively. In advertisements females are most commonly shown as sex objects. In television shows females usually play roles of the housewife. Showing men and women that the perfect women is one who: doesnt work, stays home and takes care of the household, has dinner ready when their man gets home, is always done up from head to toe, has the perfect body, doesnt think for herself and is supportive and submissi ve. What message does that send teen girls who dont think thats how it should be? Or who dont fully fit that description? Some men believe in being equal with their spouse, not minding if they wanted a job or to think for themselves and also not minding helping out around the house or with the children. Unfortunately, most men like that are rare because most of the one who actually do agree with it wont show it in fear of getting teased for their lack of masculinity. Its not wrong to accept these said gender roles. You could be just following what youve been personally taught, it could have nothing to do with the media. In late April, Arkansasà took part in the US occupation of Veracruz.à Contributing four companies of infantry to the landing force, the battleship supported the fighting from offshore.à During the battle for the city,à Arkansas detachment sustained two killed while two members won the Medal of Honor for their actions.à Remaining in the vicinity through the summer, the battleship returned to Hampton Roads in October.à Following repairs at New York, Arkansasà began three years of standard operations with the Atlantic Fleet.à These consisted of training and exercises in northern waters during the summer months and in the Caribbean in the winter.à USS Arkansas (BB-33) - World War I Serving with Battleship Division 7 in early 1917, Arkansasà was in Virginia when the US entered World War I that April.à Over the next fourteen months, the battleship operated along the East Coast training gun crews.à In July 1918,à Arkansasà transited the Atlantic and relieved USSà Delawareà (BB-28) which was serving with the 6th Battle Squadron in Admiral Sir David Beattys British Grand Fleet. Operating with the 6th Battle Squadron for the remainder of the war, the battleship sortied in late November along with the Grand Fleet to escort the German High Seas Fleet into internment at Scapa Flow.à Detached from the Grandà Fleet on December 1,à Arkansasà and other American naval forces steamed for Brest, France where they met the liner SSà George Washingtonà which was carrying President Woodrow Wilson to the peace conference at Versailles.à This done, the battleship sailed for New York where it arrived on December 26. USS Arkansas (BB-33) - Interwar Years In Mayà 1919,à Arkansas served as a guide ship for a flight of US Navy Curtiss NC flying boats as they attempted a trans-Atlantic flight before receivingà orders to join the Pacific Fleet that summer.à Passing through the Panama Canal,à Arkansasà spent two years in the Pacific during which time it visited Hawaii and Chile.à Returning to the Atlantic in 1921, the battleship spent the next four years conducting routine exercises and midshipmen training cruises.à Entering the Philadelphia Navy Yard in 1925,à Arkansasà underwent a modernization program which saw the installation of oil-fired boilers, a tripod mast aft, additional deck armor, as well as the trunking of the ships funnels into a single, larger funnel.à Rejoining the fleet in November 1926, the battleship spent the next several years in peacetime operations with the Atlantic and Scouting Fleets.à These included a variety of training cruises and fleet problems. Continuing to serve, Arkansasà was at Hampton Roads in September 1939 when World War II began in Europe.à Assigned to the Neutrality Patrol reserve force along with USSà New Yorkà (BB-34), USSà Texasà (BB-35), and USSà Rangerà (CV-4), the battleship continued training activities into 1940.à The following July,à Arkansasà escorted US forces to the north to occupy Iceland before being present at the Atlantic Charter conference a month later.à Resuming service with the Neutrality Patrol, it was at Casco Bay, ME on December 7 when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. USS Arkansas (BB-33) - World War II Following training activities in the North Atlantic,à Arkansasà arrived at Norfolk in March 1942 for an overhaul.à This saw a reduction in the vessels secondary armament and an enhancement of its anti-aircraft defenses.à After a shakedown cruise in the Chesapeake,à Arkansasà escorted a convoy to Scotland in August.à It repeated this run again in October.à Beginning in November, the battleship began protecting convoys bound for North Africa as part of Operation Torch.à Continuing in this duty until May 1943,à Arkansasà then moved to a training role in the Chesapeake.à That fall, it received orders to aid in escorting convoys to Ireland. In April 1944, Arkansasà commenced shore bombardment training in Irish waters in preparation for the invasion of Normandy.à Sortieing on June 3, the battleship joined Texasà in Group II before arriving off Omaha Beach three days later.à Opening fire at 5:52 AM,à Arkansas first shots in combat struck German positions behind the beach.à Continuing to engage targets through the day, it remained offshore supporting Allied operations for the next week.à Operating along the Norman coast for the rest of the month, Arkansasà shifted to the Mediterranean in July to provide fire support for Operation Dragoon.à Striking targets along the French Riviera in mid-August, the battleship then sailed for Boston. Undergoing a refit,à Arkansasà prepared for service in the Pacific.à Sailing in November, the battleship reached Ulithi in early 1945.à Assigned to Task Force 54,à Arkansasà took part in the invasion of Iwo Jima beginning on February 16.à Departing in March, it sailed for Okinawa where it provided fire support for Allied troops following the landings on April 1.à Remaining offshore into May, the battleships guns bombarded Japanese positions.à Withdrawn to Guam and then the Philippines, Arkansasà remained there into August.à Sailing for Okinawa late in the month, it was at sea when the word was received that the war had ended.
